1) Mini report
On the 27th of October 2020, a leisure talk called ‘Welcome to IET Talk” was being held online using the google meet platform which is organized by Institution of Engineering Technology (IET) club members. This program was held online to adapt to the current Pandemic Covid-19 situation. The program agenda was mainly to introduce and expose students to the existence of this newly born club. The program started with the introduction to the committee member of the club and the structure of the organization. From here, students get to recognize the member of the clubs and know with whom they need to consult if they have any inquiries about their future career path. The talk basically gives an insight on what I can do to guide students to move forward in their career path. The invited speaker, Dr. Rashidah Arsat clearly showed the flow to getting an Ir. title and the importance and benefit of achieving that title. She also shared her experience going through all the interviews and exams to become a Professional Engineer. Students that joined this talk were well-informed about the path that can be taken to become a certified Professional Engineer. This talk encouraged students to plan well their future utilizing all the information and knowledge they acquired in this talk which coincides with one of the graduate success attributes highlighted by UTM which is Information Management and Lifelong Learning. At the end of the talk, the IET club offered to those that were joining the talk on that day to register as their club member to receive any updates about their future activities and campaign organized by them. I grabbed this golden opportunity and successfully registered as an IET club member.
2) Reflection
‘Welcome to IET talk’ was very beneficial and informative to me as an engineering student who is still learning to carve my way to becoming a successful engineer. This talk had indirectly helped me to visualize my plan better by guiding me to stay on the right path. Before attending this talk, I never knew that there were so many choices or paths that I can take to become a professional engineer. My thought about getting a professional engineer certificate before attending this talk was still blurry and I only realized that there were lots of advantages that I can obtain from getting a professional engineer certification after hearing this inspiring sharing session by Dr. Rashidah Arsat. This talk had taught me to think more critically in planning my way to be a successful engineer and this tally with the UTM graduate success attributes which is critical thinking. Besides that, the speaker also mentioned that the element of entrepreneurship is very demanding today and it triggered me to think deeper by considering to set up my own engineering-based business and not only stick to my old plan which is just working as a salaryman.
